I am a self-taught freelance photographer based in Sydney, Australia. I have a photo of me as a toddler in about 1973 holding a Kodak box Brownie, so I guess I’ve been doing this a while! Needless to say the fascination with lenses and shutter buttons has continued…

I cut my teeth with film photography and given the choice I will always pick up a film camera if the assignment permits. Film has a gorgeous organic quality and depth that is simply beautiful, I can’t describe it any other way! However, there is still a place in my kit bag for a digital camera.

Each photography assignment I like to approach as I would my daily life: each moment to be cherished, each experience fresh and new, so no two assignments are the same, whether it be a wedding or a commercial shoot. I want to capture something unique each time.

For fellow photo-geeks, my working bag usually consists of a Nikon F6, Nikon D3 and a couple of prime lenses, my favourites are the pure and simple 50mm f1.4 and the lush 105 f2.0 which just makes everything look good! For portraits I also can’t resist my Hasselblad 500 c/m ; when I pick it up I change down a couple of gears and really observe my subject. Each clunk of the shutter seems to distil onto the film a rich moment. And just for something different, I have a bit of a sweet tooth for vintage cameras!

There is a life outside of photography. Or is there? Maybe photography inspires my life, or perhaps my curiosity to explore and experience the wide world inspires my photography. I love the freedom of two wheels, the raw thrill of pointing a surfboard along a glassy peak, exploring off the beaten track, simple food with friends, or just the comforts of home. And there’s usually a camera not too far away.
